Is 2023 the year of the Ermine?

As we inch closer to the coronation of King Charles III, there's a quiet buzz in the fashion industry about the resurgence of ermine. This luxurious fur material has been a popular choice among royalty and the elite for centuries, and it seems to be making a comeback this year. An example for us sewers is that you may find Balenciaga's faux ermine fur fabric through Mood Fabrics! Do you predict that other couture houses will design coronation, ermine-inspired pieces as well?


Interestingly, ermine was a big hit back in 1953, the year of Queen Elizabeth II's coronation. This fur material was widely used in various outfits and accessories.


Here is an example of a shoulder shrug fringed with ermine tails, taken from the Feb 1953 issue of Vogue. An example of where this piece would be worn would be for a gala performance at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.



So, if you're looking to stay ahead of the fashion curve in 2023, consider adding some ermine-inspired pieces to your wardrobe. From elegant fur-trimmed jackets, or structured ermine-spotted Balenciaga fur coats, there are plenty of ways to incorporate this trend into your style. Happy Sewing!
