The “Couture Glide”
Hello everyone! I wanted to bring to your attention how much the couture industry has changed since 1947, the year that Christian Dior launched his "new Look." Not only has the business model changed, but the way the models (or live mannequins) carried themselves while modeling couture also changed. Back then, it was important for the model to "glide" across the room, with little emphasis and movement on the hips. Contrast that to today, today's models are highly saught after if they have the "walk." The walk varies from model to model, but there's much more emphasis on the hips. Many of the designs in our collection were designed with movement in mind, but keep in mind, they were designed for the ideal couture glide, not the modern walk. I just thought this would be interesting to point out since if you reconstruct vintage designs, you must also understand the context and how they were designed to hang and move on the body.
Do you prefer the couture glide or the modern couture walk? Why or why not?
