Elizabeth Taylor’s Oscar Dress


If you are following international auctions, you probably know about the Elizabeth Taylor dress that is currently up for auction at Kerry Taylor auctions in the UK.

A fashion designer asked me how I thought this dress got its volume; he didn’t think it was because of a petticoat. He is likely right.

My guess is that the dress gets its volume from using 6” - 8” horsehair braid, attached to the underlining, around the hip line. The massive volume of the skirt is pleated in at the waistline.

Only Marc Bohan, the house of Dior, the original owner, and Kerry Taylor know the true haute couture secrets behind this dress.


Whoever ends up with this dress is one lucky owner.
