Head Seamstress at Christian Dior: Jacqueline Smeyers-Picot

I wanted to share the profile of Jacqueline Smeyers-Picot, the Head Seamstress at Christian Dior Couture. What does a head seamstress at Dior Haute Couture do? She explained that her role is as a "coordinator" who facilitates the transformation of artistic sketches into haute couture garments.

One of the things she loves is the constant innovation in her field. She mentions the importance of having a collaborative environment, and when asked about the essential traits for success in the Dior métier, she included:

  • Passion

  • Patience

  • Listening

  • Management skills


Smeyers-Picot also emphasized the importance of teaching the next generation.


Our forum is still relatively new, but I wanted to create this space to mimic an online version of a French Atelier, where we too can collaborate, share, and discuss couture techniques in the same spirit of Smeyers-Picot. In doing so, we will have contributed our part to passing down our couture sewing heritage to the next generation. I think many of us have the passion and hunger for learning, but we all need to contribute by:


  • Sharing couture topics and projects

  • Asking questions

  • Sharing ideas or techniques we learned
